today im thinking about the huge buff bread guy from kikis delivery service. highly underrated guy
Genuinely just a good man. Wife adopts teenage witch that needs a place to stay in the city? Sure. Even though you got a kid on the way? That’s fine. Cat too? Love cats.
My favorite moment with him is when he goes to get some prepped baking sheets and he does this fancy twirl with them in front of Jiji. Like, there’s no other people in the room, he does this to impress a cat.
I don’t think he ever says more than a whole word the entire movie, and I still love him more than most Disney princes based on this one moment alone.
And the part where he wanted to surprise Kiki by making that beautiful elaborate sign OUT OF BREAD to advertise her business and he was all anxious for her to get home and see it
But then when he sees her coming he gets all bashful and runs away 😭
the most underrated thing about the ghibli movies is how deeply they are love stories to working people, to the small folk, to moments of love and kindness. its not just about magic, many movies are about magic and fairytales. Its not only about the people in the stories, but about stories in the people. And they are just loveable.

spare some love for the Black Waltzes?
Black Waltzes are probably the most tragic characters in the game to me. They are true puppets of war. What Vivi and the other black mages could have become, what Zidane could have become, what Steiner could have become, if they did not have each other. They cannot define their existence beyond what they were created to do. In a way, they are more childlike than even Vivi. They are newly created beings, designed by Zorn and Thorn, who know nothing of the world. The only thing they know is that they must bring the Princess back home and they must kill everyone in their path who tries to stop them. There’s nothing else. They are designed to be more powerful and superior to the other more common Black Mages. And they are born with such awareness. In a way, they are a strange trio of elite child soldiers. They know nothing of the world and so they follow the only thing they do know, the mission from their creators. It’s so upsetting when Black Waltz No. 3 can do nothing but repeat the one truth he knows - as if he’s trying to find another reason for existence after witnessing Vivi and the other Black Mages reject their origins.
The Black Waltzes seem to have been created with sentience just like Vivi, unlike the other black mages that must awaken first. The only difference is they were not given the chance to grow or experience life like Vivi who grew and learned from his Grandpa. When you meet Black Waltz No. 3 again as Garnet, Steiner, and Marcus the battle is almost a mercy kill. You can’t die because No. 3 (following its sole mission and reason for existence) will not harm Garnet and so you will always win. You will always be able to kill No. 3 and put it out of its miserable, meaningless existence. Because to exist only to kill, only to hurt, only to follow orders, only to perpetuate war and suffering is not a reason for existence at all. It is a tragedy that Zorn and Thorn created the three waltzes as such.
